Innovation time throughout the year was very helpful to me. It gave me a chance to learn something new and set goals for myself. It was very meaningful to set aside a time to do this and get myself organized. The most meaningful part of innovation time for me was having a time to learn how to knit. Setting time apart for that was a big help because knitting a scarf takes a lot of time. I'm very grateful to be given this innovation opportunity.

I performed well at our meet last Friday. I ran about the same time as I have been in my 400, but I kept up with the competition and ran very well in all my events. After getting home from that meet at 12:30, and having a very long and busy weekend, we had a hard practice yesterday. I like when we get a chance to have a hard workout inbetween meets and resting for meets. After doing lots of repeats, I feel more ready for the meet tomorrow, and hopefully will have the time improvements I've been looking for.
So today at practice I felt I had a lot of progress. My meet on Friday didn't go as well as I'd liked either and I'm realizing I'm just not as in shape for the times I want as I could be. So today we did a lot of sprinting work. Sprints with a jog inbetween down and back on the field were first. Next we're sprinting and jogging intervals around the track. I didn't feel sore necessarily, just tired from the heat. Watching what I eat has been helpful too. Not just cutting out the bad foods, but replacing them with good foods.
So progress on my 400... Well. My meet yesterday was pretty darn bad, but there's definitely a reason. I was in New York from Monday until 1:30 yesterday. Running a track meet after a total of 2 hours of flying, 4 hours of sitting and waiting, and 3 hours of driving, I didn't do too well during my races. This experience really shows me how important my diet is too. Having eaten either extremely fancy food (dinner for 2 was $160) or extremely cheap food, I realize how much of an effect food has on an athlete's performance. I'll definitely be keeping that even more inconsideration now.
Since the last time I blogged, I've had one meet. That meet was in Bronson against Bronson and Athens. I was in the 4x1, 4x2, 4x4, and 400. All our relays were sort of a flop, besides the 4x2 which we placed 1st in. In the 400, I placed second with a time of 1:04.9, which is technically improvement since our last meet before that, but only barely. I need to start getting faster and sooner. A short term goal for right now is the be the fastest 400 runner at All City, which is April 21st. In order to run the fastest 400 that I can, I need to perfect my practices and workouts. My coaches know what they're doing so I am following what they tell me in order to do repeats and weightlift to a point that will improve myself to the best I can be.
After having my first track meet of the season, I know a baseline of what my times are. I was in three relays runnin three different 400s. I ran a 1:05 each time. Coach Minier was proud of me and gave me the athlete of the meet award. I'm happy with my times because I'm faster than I was at the beginning of last year. Practices are going well for me too. Working hard when doing repeats is a necessity if I want to reach my goal of breaking a school record from 39 years ago. So far I'm off to a good start and I'm very happy with where I'm at right now.
We had our first outdoor practices this week on Monday and today. It was really nice to get outside and have more of a track atmosphere. Yesterday I worked on hand-offs so it wasn't very beneficial for my 400, but we did 15 minutes of sprint repeats on the field as well, along with practicing the blocks. Today at practice I had 400 and 800 repeats at which I had to do at a certain percentage of speed or under a certain amount of time. I didn't do as well with the time ones as I'd like, but there were factors like the cold and wind, and not to mention my first day of a hard sprinting repeat workout. Not too many problems have occurred yet, other than my back being very tight everywhere. We have our first meet this Saturday at Aquinas and I'm doing 3 400s so I'll be able to blog about those races next week.
With track practices starting this week, I'm really really looking forward to my end goal. It stinks that practices are inside so I don't have too much to log about workouts and training plans. I've made a spreadsheet of all my 400 times from sophomore and junior year, and I've found that I'm a little bit inconsistent. Luckily though, my coach has the same goal I do for myself (which is getting under 60 seconds and breaking the school record from 1981).
In only a week, track will start and I'll really get to start my progress on running the fastest 400 I can. Until then, I've still been working on my finger crocheting. It's a steady progess. Since the first time I flew through it and ended up dropping over half the stitches, I have to be very tedeous and count every row after I do it to make sure there are 46 stitches. It makes my hands dry, touching the yarn so much, but I'm excited for how the blanket will turn out.
Since I'm sort of in the middle of two overlapping innovation projects, I'll talk a little bit about both. The project that is a branch off of my knitting project, the finger crocheting, is going allright. Last night I had to undo and take out the majority of my blanket. Without realizing it, I had been losing stitches every couple rows so my blanket ended up getting half as wide as it was when I started which is why I had to take it out. I still don't know how I was losing stitches, but now as I continue it again, I count the stitches per row after every stripe to make sure I'm on track.
On my new project, I won't be able to make too much progress until track season starts. However, by my next post, I plan on creating a record of all my times from races last year and this winter indoors. |
